Bottled Gourd


  • 1 Medium Sized Bottled Gourd (cut into bite sizes)
  • 1 Large Onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 Pips Garlic (finely chopped)
  • 1/2 Inch Ginger (finely chopped)
  • 1 Green/Red Chilly (finely chopped)
  • 2 Stalks Coriander (chopped)
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garam Masala
  • 1 Egg (optional)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 2 tablespoon Butter or Oil


  1. Wash and chop the bottle gourd into bite sizes)
  2. Fry the cumin seeds, onion, garlic, ginger and chilly in some butter till slightly brown.
  3. Add in the spices and chopped coriander and saute for 5 minutes.
  4. Add water and cook for 5 minutes.
  5. Add in the bottled gourd and mix thoroughly on medium heat.
  6. Cover it for 15 minutes and add water if necessary as the moisture from the bottled gourd will be there.
  7. Add salt and stir.
  8. Cook for further 20 minutes till bottled gourd is tender to touch.
  9. We add 1 egg to it and mix well.
  10. Serve with rotis, rice and other dishes. **my MAA used to ask our helpers to add some fresh milk in the evenings for dinner if there were left overs** her favourite vegetable.Even I tried it... Yummy
